Gora Novel by Rabindranath Tagore

Gora Novel written by Rabindranath Tagore Bengali PDF.

'Gora' is a nationalist novel by Rabindranath Tagore. It is set in the backdrop of English-ruled Calcutta in the 1880s. It is the longest of Rabindranath's thirteen novels. 'Gora' is basically a novel rich in philosophical debates on politics and religion.

Gora: Swaraj and Nationalism in Rabindra-Thought:

The entire background of Gora's novel is the time when Calcutta was the capital of the British Empire. The society was then divided into two groups. On one side were the customs of Hindu society, idolatry, caste justice. And on the other side was the Brahmo Samaj, who wanted to reject the negative aspects of Hinduism and move forward with the positive aspects of English rule. Raja Rammohan Roy, the founder of Brahmo Samaj, used to take the help of the British in those cases through which the welfare of India would be achieved, but did not support the British in those cases where the British exploited our country. As a result, the Brahmo society of Raja Rammohan Roy becomes very important in this novel.

The caste system had a very deep influence on the society of that time, the influence of which can be seen even today. Even today we move away from xenophobic thinking and rarely think about development. Even today there are many societies and communities that deny the humanity of people in the name of caste system. That's why Rabindranath in his novel 'Gora' talked about rising above the caste system by giving importance to universal humanity. So the novel 'Gora' has relevance and importance in the current society and politics.

Did Rabindranath Tagore directly participate in the Swadeshi movement?

'Gora' is the main character of this novel, through Gora, Rabindranath Tagore has shown the transition from the Hindutva reforms of the nationalist movement to universal humanity. Rabindranath never directly participated in the Swadeshi movement. His only means of protest were various writings and novels. He created the character 'Gora' as a symbol of united power against the British. In fact Rabindranath through the character of Gora wanted to teach the leaders of the nationalist movement of that time what the nature of the nationalist movement should be!. He has highlighted each and every character of this novel as an aspect of our country society.

The word nationalism is not only limited to the excesses of Hinduism, but the unity of every people of India is the main element of nation building, he has described through every event and character of this novel. He felt that the aggressive attitude of foreign powers was not responsible for the subjugation of India, but our own lack of duty and service to our country was much more responsible. That's why he while unveiling the meaning of real Swaraj wrote, 'The patriot who says, first get Swaraj and then do the work of the Swadesh, his greed is in the flag-waving, uniform-clad painted structure of Swaraj'. Words are likewise untruthful, and such Swaraj is baseless'.

In this novel, it can be seen that due to being brought up in a Hindu-Brahmin family, Gora was full of superstitions and bigotry of Hinduism. He believed that a beautiful, well-organized India would emerge based on the traditions of Hinduism. But leaving the city of Calcutta and going to Charghoshpur, he saw the real face of his homeland. There, seeing the misrule of the English, the plight of the village people, ignorance, superstition, he gave importance to rural development. He tells Vinay, 'Show the all-encompassing image of India to everyone - then people will go crazy, rush to die'.

That is, if the mismanagement and tyranny of the village is presented to the people, people will come forward and join the development of the village through rebellion, through which the country will develop. And only through that the country can be freed from British shackles. Here Rabindranath's nationalism is revealed. He repeatedly emphasized on self-development and self-reliance of our countrymen. The Gora's believed in the superstitions of extreme Hindu Brahmanism. In fact he confused India with the customs and rules of Hinduism.

What does Rabindranath mean by nationalism in this book?

Rabindranath showed that this was the error of 'Gora', that there was no real India in the reformation of Hinduism. He never considered nationalism to be a distorted and separatist idea of a nation, and he certainly feared that such separatist distorted nationalism would destroy the unity of India. He believed that showing respect for all races and communities of the country, giving importance to all other religions and folk cultures, creating self-reliance among the people, etc. were the main points of patriotism and nationalism. But he never indulged in distorted nationalism and divisive nationalism.

So when Gora left the city of Calcutta to see the village life of Sattikar, he realized that the real failure of the Renaissance or Renaissance is that the educated and the uneducated, the rural life and the urban mentality have not yet met, we could not unite with those uneducated helpless people. As a result, even though there is a cover of Hindutva reform outside Gora, the conflict of that reform has started in the heart.

In fact, nationalism means the strong desire of all the people of a country to form a state, where there is no gender-caste distinction. These distinctions did not exist early in the nationalist movement in India.

This division is partly English and created by some self-interested leaders of our country. Nationalism is never a race, if it was, it would be deadly and unjust. Rabindranath wrote his novel 'Gora' against that divisive tendency.
